When to use a disposable tourniquet
A disposable tourniquet is a specialised piece of equipment intended for extreme emergencies. This product is a standard component of our first aid kits; however, we offer them here as individual extras so you can keep your emergency supplies fully stocked.
WARNING: A tourniquet is dangerous and should only be utilised if the injury is located on the tail or a limb and the dog is at risk of bleeding to death. Specifically, you should only apply this device when standard pressure bandages have failed to control severe haemorrhage. Because incorrect application can cause permanent tissue damage, this product should not be used without prior first aid training.
Critical safety guidance
If a disposable tourniquet must be used to save a dog’s life, you must follow these strict safety protocols:
-
The tourniquet should NOT be left on longer than TWO HOURS in total.
-
If possible, you should release the tourniquet every 15 minutes for 15 seconds to allow a temporary blood supply to the limb.
-
Always aim to place a sufficient pressure bandage over the wound and remove the tourniquet as soon as the bleeding is controlled.
- This is not a long term solution to control bleeding – head to your nearest vet immediately.
